New Work
Project info

For the past few years I have been taking photographs in and around the neighborhood I live in, Germantown and North Philadelphia. As much as the images seem to represent accurate depictions of the spaces I photograph, the work really functions as a poetic narrative and a rumination on the role of photographic images and their limits. It is the surface of things that I am most interested in, and it is the surface of things that the photograph is most adept at capturing. My photographs do not claim knowledge of the people or places I photograph, but merely to hold a momentary impression permanent. In that sense, my photographs are flat fragments of the world, reorganized into a narrative that reflects my experience that place. But importantly my experience of the place is mediated through my experience of film and photography itself. They are depictions, caught up in a mirror that photography itself has helped to create.
