These images are from my Alternative Landscapes project in which I sought to turn from the quite traditional route that I had been following of searching out lovely early morning and late evening light, finding locations with beautiful views, and then looking for maximum depth of field and sharpness from front to back. Instead I experimented creatively with various in-camera techniques, seeking more impressionistic or abstract images that would not depend so much on depth of field or quality of light and would be truly one off and unique artistic creations. In this series, I have used two main approaches: firstly, handheld long exposures of between 2-4 seconds with neutral density filters giving me time to move the camera intentionally to create abstract patterns, soft-focus effects, and multi-textural marks rather like brush strokes; secondly, in-camera double exposures with each combination of images visualised and composed in camera to give multi-layered and illusionary surprises. I have used a square format to complement the more abstract and complex images that have resulted, The images were taken with my Sony A7II camera using adapted Zeiss lenses from my old Contax film camera. The images have been minimally edited using Lightroom only
