Sometimes I Dream in Italian

During my 10 years living in Italy I resided in buildings that ranged in age from a few hundred to over one thousand years old. That the whole scope of human being, from birth through death, had been experienced in those spaces many times over profoundly moved me. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I felt the presence of those who preceded me.

Prior to that time, I rarely remembered my dreams and those I did recall left no lasting impression. In those ancient rooms, however, my dreams were especially vivid and intense. I’d awaken from those dream worlds with fragmented shifting memories of sounds and visions. Many days an amorphous sea of faces, bodies, and voices lingered in my awareness.

Sometimes I Dream in Italian was inspired by those dreams. They were created from bits and pieces of images made during my time in Italy.
