Blur and motion are rarely elements of architectural photography. Architectural photographs usually document, in the finest detail, the results of collaborative and aesthetic three-dimensional endeavors. By discarding my multi-decade background as an international architectural photographer, this series explores motion and abstraction, a distinct and different paradigm of self-expression closer to home.
To initiate this mode of seeing, I began shooting with a slow shutter speed out the window of my car, as I moved through the landscapes of New Mexico. This approach displaces preconceived, planned and perfectly composed image making with random abstraction, a willingness to take chances, and an acceptance that mistakes are essential elements of the process.
This work is an exploration into the unknown, the uncertain, the unpredictable, and the abstract. In the course of its creation, my approach to visual expression and experimentation has been transformed.
