Night Trees of New York
I shoot dioramas and "portraits" of trees at night. I use only available light and look for "million dollar lighting packages” when shooting. I find greater impact at night, when "the veil" is thinner and you feel the essence of the tree much more. They exude mystery and magic and power that goes unnoticed in the day. There is irony in that these magnificent natural beings somehow seem more alive when they appear most artificial - as if they are characters in museum dioramas.
I grew up in the midst of old-growth forests in Oregon and I have been in NYC for decades and this series combines two great loves. My feelings for trees and nature grew as I created this series, so perhaps it will for others.
