Thus Far No Further: A Photographic History of Voting Rights

Throughout the 20th century, the movement to secure the right to vote for people of color lead to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 2013, The Supreme Court removed a critical section of the VRA and cleared the way for an assault on that right. Following that judgement, a series of new voter ID laws and other restrictions began limiting access to the poll and targeting the very people the VRA was designed to protect. In 2016 with the election of Donald Trump, the accusations of voter fraud focused governmental agencies on further limiting the right to vote by American citizens. My ongoing project is a documentation of hundreds of key moments and places, with references to the countless people who worked in the movement to secure this right to vote. I am doing this work to call attention to this effort and the lives lost in the struggle to get the vote. I see it as a reminder of a history that I recall as a child in an attempt to remind not only my generation but also to teach a new generation the power and significance that a vote possesses and what it took to get that right.
