The Unseen
Project info

On March 11th 2011, a huge earthquake and tsunami hit Sendai in the Tohoku area of Japan where I live. When I went to the area devastated by the tsunami on March 17th, I had no idea what to expect or what to photograph. Everything was destroyed. Small towns became wilderness areas wiped out by the power of water. Debris was everywhere. Sadness was everywhere.

I kept going back to the damaged areas to photograph and see the changing seasons. The mountains of debris became bigger and bigger. Everything in sight was still broken. I eventually noticed something beautiful there that could never be broken.

“Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.” — Law of Conservation of Energy

I was inspired by the idea that the areas affected by the disaster must be full of energy from all the people whose lives were suddenly taken by the tsunami. My pursuit was to capture the radiance of their energy and through this work show the beauty that I found there.
