When someone says “intimacy” or “intimate relationships”, most people would think of sex. Although sexual relationships of any sort may or may not be present, intimacy is based primarily on trust.
For many years I photographed young women and did not understand what I was looking for. Neither did they ever articulate that. Were they interested in love or friendship or other relationships? I am not sure any of us understood and none of us asked. Now I believe they were looking for intimacy. They sought for time structured with taking photos and our conversations about everything. They undressed physically and mentally to the degree they trusted me. And so did I. Some of those relationships ended with pain. Some were quick and nice. Some still continue.
