Holy Spirit

"Holy Spirit" is an ongoing long term project on Mezcal, the culture around it the families and communities producing around the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Mezcal, now booming in popularity worldwide, has humble roots as the Americas' oldest and most artisanal spirit it's production methods passed down from generation to generation for hundreds of years within families. It is deeply ingrained into the fabric of the indigenous communities which make it. It is an ancestral right, an indispensable social lubricant and a large part of the subsistence of many rural villages. For this project I spent time with several master mezcaleros and their families who are still producing their spirit in the most traditional methods in the face of mounting economic pressure to modernize.
