Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Feb 2013. Olympic stadium. Designed by the famous architect Vann Molyvann it was completed in 1964. ?It was used as execution site during the Pol Pot regime era. After the Khmer Rouge all the facilities fell into disrepair till 2000 when it was redeveloped by a Taiwanese firm.

Thala District (Stung Treng province), Cambodia Dec 2009. Young monks are studing the prayers. The electricity does not reach the district Thala.?This monastery (with annex orphanage), has couple of hours a day of electricity thanks to an old generator. This district is one of the poorest in Cambodia with very high percentual of HIV positive people.

Kep province, Cambodia. Jan 2013. Worker in a road construction site near the Vietnam’s border. Few “Highways” in the country, all in very poor conditions. Most of the secondary roads are still unpaved.

?Pailin, Cambodia. March, 2013. Traditional wedding. Pailin was the last stronghold of the Khmer Rouge, before the mass defection. All the former Khmer Rouge retreated here and the current governor is a former bodyguard for Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot. The deputy governor is Ieng Vuth, son of Ieng Sary, former foreign affair minister in the Pol Pot regime, died in 2013 at 87 and never been judged.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Dec 2012. Diamond island. Elite Golf Club. This small island on the Mekong, in the center of Phnom Penh, was a strip of land dedicated to farming until 2005 before the eviction of peasants and development under the motto “Luxury Living”. All the “development” of the capital is mo- ving in this direction.

Koh Kong, Cambodia. Jan 2013. Buddhist monks in a mangrove forest in Koh Kong province, “The wild West”. This region was completely isolated from the rest of the country till 2008. Privatization of large areas, rampant corruption, illegal logging are making the country’s development unsustainable.

Kampot province, Cambodia. Dec 2011. Rehabilitation of the railway network by Tso (France) + Toll (Australia). Are considered “safe” (cleared of unexploded ordnance-landmines) 5 m - 5m right and left from the center of the railroad.

Takeo, Cambodia. Dec 2011. Railway station, ticket office. The rail network is under rehabilitation, no passenger train yet. The railway network was built during the colonial period and was abandoned during the Khmer Rouge Regime (1975-79) and damaged by a neverending war. After decades of neglect, now started the rehabilitation.

August 26, 2008, the Phnom Penh Post write:“Boeung Kak lake: The biggest urban relocation since the Khmer Rouge evacuation of Phnom Penh in April 1975.”On August 7, 2008, from public “land”, the lake has been reclassified into state private land with the idea to fill it with sand to build on it.

The White Building was built in the 60?s, project by the famous architect Vann Molyvann.With its imposing size, at that time, changed the face of a “low” capital, composed by individual houses in an attempt to introduce a system of functional and comfortable low-cost housing units in a central area of the city. Aeon Mall (Cambodia), a japanese developer, is building a US$ 205 million mall. 68400 sq.m including 150 large retail units, a cinema complex (1000 seats) and 15000 sq.m of entertainment space. It will create more than 2000 jobs.

Koh Kong, Cambodia. Jan 2013. Safari World Waterpark. Former dodgy and dengerous border town. In 2008, thanks to the construction of the road 48, which led capital and tourism and imposed a crackdown on widespread crime, the entire province came out from its isolation from the rest of the country.

Botum Sakor National Park, Cambodia. Jan 2013. Temporary housing for workers. A 4 lane highway is under construction through the heart of this 1834 sq-km national park. This is the first step of a US$ 5 billion chinese project: golf courses, resorts, airport, port: launched in 2010 it will take 30 years to complete.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Dec 2009. A guy is having lunch in his apartment. 325 meters long for three floors, long dark corridors broken by external stairs used as a place of rest. Over 2000 inhabitants live in the building, a microcosm where cheap prostitutes, artists, drug dealers, families and students coexist. This cumbersome, dilapidated, uncomfortable presence won’t resist for much longer.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Feb 2013. Policeman. Police is poorly equipped and salaries are very low, corruption is very common among everyone that can afford to pay. It’s also common to see citizens not respecting their authority.

Celebrating the cremation of King Father Norodom Sihanouk, icon of the XX century for the cambodians: two terms as king, two as sovereign prince, one as president, two as prime minister, as well as numerous positions as leader of various governments-in-exile.
