PUNING 普宁, Municipal Region Jieyang, Guangdong Province, PR China 2017
Dr David Cubby
Puning is a county-level city within the municipal region of Jieyang, southeast Guangdong Province, China.
During late October 2017 artists and photographers led by David Lai and David Cubby mostly connected via varying degrees of interest, research and/or teaching with Western Sydney University (WSU) travelled to Puning from Shenzhen within Guangdong Province supported by China-Australia Cultural and Creative Industries and 5A1 Art Space, Shenzhen PR China.
Traditional culture within China is deep and immutable, even as circumstances change dramatically and radically through colonisation or revolution, Confucian thought and values remain steadfast, an identifying characteristic of Han people.
“During the past few decades China has gone through an extraordinary process of modernization. Due to economic development, urbanization and exchanges with the outside world, people in China today lead lives that are strikingly similar to the lives of people in the Western world. At the same time, there has been a return to the indigenous cultural tradition. Confucius is back at the centre of Chinese culture now, even becoming an ideological pillar of the state – what would Chairman Mao have said?”
