People and Plants

Where do plants come from? How have plants reacted to the arrival of human beings on planet Earth? This project aims to observe the environment upon which people have come to impose themselves. In this series, most of the photos are shot in my native country’s woods and in urban and botanical gardens of several metropolitans’ areas I’ve visited. Making the main use of red and green, I want to create a link between what these colors symbolize in human’s culture. Red has been associated with human energy throughout history, whilst green in nature is chlorophyll, the chemical responsible for plants photosynthesis. Two colors standing on opposite sides of the circle of the theory of colors, yet so close when we relate them to two entities that have co-existed for many centuries; people and plants. With these photographs, I want to take the viewers through a visual narrative about the evolution of the first plants and fl owers and on to the humans’ impact on nature that has led us into the present Anthropocene age. Looking at the environment around me, I want my photographs to inspire and provoke thinking about the state of ecology throughout history. A story that has of today, leaves us somewhat in a limbo between utopian and dystopian future outcomes.
