Since moving to Southern California my relationship to both the landscape and place have been mediated by speed. Constant momentum leaves a person with a perception dominated by flatness, not because this is the nature of the landscape here, but because it's the nature of experiencing a place by driving through, over, or past it. These photographs are stops, both literally and figuratively, locations jest off, or to the side of the freeway. Each photograph is titled by the location were the image was made. These images are not necessarily emblematic of the places named in the title, they can't be, LA is too haphazard and too big. These are pieces of fabric ripped from the enormous bolt that is this place, fracturing time and space in that magical way that only still photography can. I am photographing with a Noblex, a mechanical film camera with a rotating lens that takes in 135˚ view. In this long skinny rectangle which mirrors the low open horizon of Los Angeles I find a formal equivalent to the experience of constantly moving through this place.
