My photographic career began in the early 1990s, while I was working full time in neuroscience research. Working in science is not like working a regular 9 to 5 job. So the only time I could photograph was during the weekends. I’m drawn to taking pictures of people. In the lab, I was used to everything being structured, but when I’m out in the world taking pictures – nothing is controlled and the unexpected always happens, - for me this is a joyous gift of photography! The majority of my photographs are from the San Francisco Bay Area: protest marches, fetish cultures, Day of the Dead, Gay Pride and street images. My work method is to keep an open mind, engage in my surrounds & never take anything for granted. I know this mindset makes a BIG difference in approaching and exploring different worlds of life because it doesn’t limited you to deny certain circumstances when you see and feel them photographically. Late in 2017, I left academia and now, I work as a full time photographer/photo essayist and artist.
