The Dutch sold New York
The Dutch have this frustrated relation with New York. In fact they never sold New Amsterdam, but they gave it away after the war with the British, changing it for Suriname. Still fascinated by the USA lots of Dutch citizens emigrated there, like some of my family members did after the second World War. In their houses you can feel these two cultures having mingled in this strange way. They hold on to the Netherlands as they knew it in the fifties, and transformed it into a new Dutch/American identity.
