Born in Poland (1980), Rafal Gerszak was forced to flee his home due to the Soviet regime. He and his family lived for some time in a West German refugee camp before immigrating to Canada in 1990. He spent 3 years studying photography and graduated in 2006 from Langara College in Vancouver, Canada. From 2008 to 2010, he worked on long-term projects dealing with the underlying issues of the ongoing Afghan conflict. Currently he examines life in Canada's Northern and most remote communities through photography and video.

Rafal's multi-award-winning book for young adults, Beyond Bullets: A Photo Journal of Afghanistan, was published in 2011 by Annick Press.
