Tom was born in 1959, and spent his early years in Eastern Virginia. He worked in agriculture and the nursery industry, and studied horticulture at Virginia Tech. He completed his undergraduate studies with an emphasis in art history at the University of Richmond in 1989.
In 1992, Tom completed graduate studies at the University of Virginia, with a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture.
He has lived in Modesto, California with his spouse, John, since 1992. In addition to his photographic projects, he cultivates a small olive farm. Tom was ordained as a priest in the Sōtō Zen tradition in 2017.
