About Alan Wieder

Alan Wieder is an oral historian and street photographer who lives in Portland, Oregon. He taught for 23 years at the University of South Carolina and his work has included political studies of racism in the United States and apartheid in South Africa. His most recent book is titled Studs Terkel: Politics, Culture, But Mostly Conversation. Corresponding with his oral histories, he has been a street photographer since 1974. His photography has been exhibited in Cape Town, South Carolina, and Oregon; and he has published this work in various magazines and journals. Since 2016 he has been privileged to study with Bruce Gilden, Peter Turnley, David Alan Harvey, Costas Manos, and Harvey Stein.
