Born and raised in southern China, Amy Luo obtained her Master's degree in European Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh and went on to further her research at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Since her graduation, Luo has been engaged with feature film projects, documentaries as well as news reportages both in China and abroad.
In 2015, Luo graduated from the International Centre of Photography (ICP) in New York with the Rita.K.Hillman Award of Excellence. Since then, her work has been exhibited internationally, including in Museum of International Center of Photography, Edition One Gallery, and Arles Photography Festival. Her work has been featured, among others, in Photograph Magazine, PDN Magazine, American Photography, GEO Saison and The Guardian. It has also been cited with a number of awards including being placed as a finalist for Fine Art photography in the first edition of the Magnum Photography Awards in 2016.
From 2018 to 2021, Luo launched a series of public art projects in China, aiming to portray lives of rural migrant workers--a largely marginalized group in China. Through the projects, she hopes to highlight their living status and emotional needs. Her projects have gained widespread attention and social engagement in China and abroad, including a NHK World documentary in 2019.
