A photographic memoir of Peking as it was before the Communist revolution in 1949. Photographer Hedda Morrison left Nazi Germany in 1933 and took over the management of a photographic studio in Peking; between 1933 and 1946 she photographed the city and its inhabitants with an alert and sensitive eye. Her work forms a fine record of a city which has changed radically since the date of the photographs.
