From Italian experimentalist Paolo Gioli comes a body of work that is at once haunting and powerful. Using discovered plates from a portrait studio of the 1950's, Gioli has brought to the surface the broad and chiaroscuro-like gestures of the retoucher's hand--only ghostly hints of faces remain lurking beneath the bespeckled and reworked surface.
