Magnum photographer Carl De Keyzer traveled for two years in Eastern Europe in preparation for this book. Immersed in the daily life of postcommunist Poland, eastern Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Bulgaria, Albania, Croatia, and Serbia, De Keyzer captured the ongoing paradox between the newfound idealized opportunism of Western life and the more immediate, crueler realities of poverty, unemployment, and political crises. With essays by major Eastern European writers, including Cioran, Havel, Milosz, Konrad, and Kadare, this is a penetrating portrait of life in a region in transition.
