Concrete & Sympathy

Designed by Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo, the Fine Arts Center at UMass Amherst is a poured concrete brutalist structure intended to offer art and performance spaces for the children of working families in Massachusetts. As the son of a working class family, these buildings fulfilled the promise of their design, in an angular way, by providing a first-class skate spot for myself and many others over the years. This series looks at that place under social distance.
