Your Silence

I create work based on my childhood experience of selective mutism. In 2017 I invited the dancer Reisa Shimojima, who is not herself a person with selective mutism, to imagine and perform a body marked by mutism, and from that performance I produced the book Breaking Stones. For this new piece, I have revisited and partially re-used photographs from that time, restructuring them through a completely different approach. It is a work about “silence” as it exists within the social world of school.
