"80°05′: A Photobook" is a visual story that delves into the simple yet profound question: "What drives us to expeditions?" The protagonist of the work is the Japanese explorer Nobu Shirase, who, in 1912, became one of the first to attempt reaching the South Pole, and the contemporary explorer Masatatsu Abe, who carries on Shirase's legacy. Through extensive research into Shirase’s historical background, as well as a close look at Abe’s personal life and his roots, the book seeks to visualize the motivations behind these explorers’ quests.
The photobook is a handcrafted edition, with every aspect of its creation, from editing and design to binding, executed by the artist himself. The hard cover fabric is made from the same material used for the jacket worn by the protagonist, explorer Abe, during his Antarctic expedition.
Shortlisted for the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award Arles 2022 and the Cologne PhotoBookMuseum Dummy Award 2023. It was also one of the winners of the open call for photobooks at the Belfast Photo Festival 2024.
