Wange an Wange

Wange an Wange

by Marcia Friese

Cheek to Cheek is an artist book about grief — a personal attempt to approach the unfamiliar state of living without a mother. The work combines two elements: photographs of dust found in the rooms of the artist’s mother in the months after her death, and calendar entries written during the same period. Together, they form a quiet, intimate record of mourning.

The images focus on dust as both material and metaphor for what remains: traces of a life, of presence, of daily routines interrupted. The accompanying notes reveal the internal movement of those weeks — the search for orientation, the repetitions, the exhaustion, the attempt to understand a world that has shifted.

The book reflects the idea that we learn how to grieve by watching others. It offers one such path: not as a universal model, but as a personal document. There is no right or wrong way to grieve; there is only the movement through it. Cheek to Cheek may open space for readers who feel alone in their loss, invite conversations that have been postponed, or encourage people to find their own way through grief.
