This substantial and well designed monograph, complete with a biographical essay, establishes the legacy of North Carolina's first well-known woman photographer. Showing an evolution in style from romantic pictorialism to a grittier, Dorothea Lange-like modern eye, Wootten's interests clearly lie more closely with her subject than her style; but then the photographs are quite beautiful.
