Photographer James Balog has assembled this collection of portraits of endangered or protected animals along with information about each individual species including the threats to its survival. He makes his portraits in surreal and unnatural environments: one animal is in a stark white studio; another seems to float in front of a net; yet another seems poised halfway between the natural landscape and the studio background. Survivors uses these remarkable photographs to create a moving plea for the preservation of vanishing animals of all types--mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians--around the world.
