In/Sight: African Photographers, 1940 to the Present

At the same time that Africa was throwing off its Colonial rulers, it was picking up the camera. This monograph, and the Guggenheim's exhibition of the same name, trace 50 years of African photographic history revealing a wealth of photodocumentary, arhcitectural, and art photography only beginning to be known to the West. Essays by Okwui Enwezor, Octavio Zaya, and Olu Oguibe explore issues of representation, transformation, Western perception, and tradtional usages of the image.
