This recent work by Howard Schatz (author of Redheads and Gifted Woman) is a powerful study of Americans who live on the streets. Stark portraits against a black background compose the collection of images, which is accompanied by texts in the subjects' own words. A moving and sometimes haunting book, Homeless spans a wide range of perspectives on homelessness--many of the portrait subjects view their situations as a matter of personal choice; others are not so confident. An important work by a distinctive photographer.
