The Brazilian Photographs of Genevieve Naylor, 1940-1942

by Robert M. Levine

Publisher's Description
Well known for her work with Harper's Bazaar, an early one woman show at the Modern, and her stint as Eleanor Roosevelt's personal photographer, Geneveive Naylor spent the war photographing for the Sate Department. In the early 1940s there was concern in Washington that Brazil would side with Japan and Germany destabilizing the Western hemisphere. Naylor was sent to accumulate propaganda for an effort to pursuade Americans that their Latin American neighbors were reliable allies. The photographs that she returned with are more of a testament to humanity, than an evaluation of a nation.
