Doris Ulmann: American portraits

Doris Ulmann photographed the people of the Appalachian Mountains for nearly a decade during summers away from her New York home. The photographs in this volume, many reproduced for the first time, reflect the range of Ulmann's social concerns, from the Shaker and Mennonite areas of New York and Pennsylvania to rural black people of South Carolina. In his introduction, Featherstone, executive associate at the Friends of Photography, establishes Ulmann as an important transitional photographer, from the romantic pictorialism of the teens and twenties, to the documentary of the thirties. A beautifully produced volume on this important photographer.
