Photography in Brazil 1840-1900

This book documents the unique patronage that photographers enjoyed in nineteenth-century Brazil. Thanks to a prolonged period of political stability and the Emperor's avid interest in photography, Brazil produced more photography than any other Latin American country. Gilberto Ferrez has conducted a thorough study of the major photographers and studios active in Brazil, with special emphasis on landscape and cityscape photography. Also included are contemporaneous accounts, advertisements, caricatures, and illustrations, as well as many photographic reproductions.
