The Western Homestead Era began in the late 19th century, when federally owned short grass prairies and sagebrush country were opened up to farming. John Martin Campbell travelled all over the Western United States to document what remains of the schoolhouses of that time. In straightforward duotone photogrpahs, Campbell captures the spirit of a simpler age, accompanying each image with a textual note.
