This is a collection of unusual hand-tinted photographs of Japan from the collection of botanist Alexander Vasilyevich Grigoryev who travelled to Japan in 1870. Never published as a collection, these outstanding examples of early photography in Japan convey a little seen view of Japanese life in the last half of the 19th century.
