20th Century French Photography

In this volume written by three curators from the most well-respected art institutions in France-- the Bibliothèque Nationale, Centre Pompidou, and the Ministry of Culture and Communications--the development of French photography of the twentieth century is traced beginning with its pictorial and documentary tradition through the current interest in photography as an art form, a companion to literature, and a form of performance. Master photographers such as Atget, Brassaï, Man Ray, Cartier-Bresson, and Lartigue, among many others are placed in context along with the current generation of contemporary photographers. This is a good chance to see much new and unusual European photography.
