Germany 1945: Views of War and Violence

A compelling analysis immediate post-war Germany, and the use of photographs as evidence for politcal, cultural, and historical interpretation. Central to Barnouw's thesis is the relationship of captions, written at the time, to the interpretation of images. Barnouw argues that photographs reveal a multiplicity of motives and views that, unlike trends in history, can never flatten the information they contain.
