Swiss photographer Ed Beyeler made these images of the abandoned federal penitentiary on San Francisco Bay's Alcatraz Island before the National Parks Service renovated it and opened it to the public. In his foreword, Wallace Stegner calls Beyeler's effort "a longitudinal section of prisoner despair, hopelessness made visible." The contrast between the ruin's physical bleakness and the Bay's beauty is particularly striking.
