This profusely illustrated book covers the history of the photographing of the American Indian by government agents and exhibition photographers and independent photographers. It includes an extensive and well-written history of American-Indian relations and the impact of photography on those interactions. Many of the photographs are from the Bureau of American Ethnology collection (Now part of the Smithsonian Institution) and have never before been published.
