This special issue of Aperture documents the photographic symposium held at the Esalen Institute in California in 1982. Discussed at the symposium were the artist's value in society, as well as the future of photography and art. Among those giving presentations at the Institute were Linda Connor, Frank Gohlke, Ray Metzker, and William Christenberry.
