O Say Can You See : American Photographs 1839-1939

Many of the photographs in this book are reproduced for the first time and most represent lesser-known or infrequently exhibited American artists from one of the largest private collections of photography. Variants of important works, previously unknown images and prints, and numerous unusual photographs provide a new and stimulating view of the medium. A large selection of Pictorialist and Photo-secession prints are also included. Fels' text offers an examination of the close relationship between images and events, and of the place of the medium in American culture.
