One in five children in the United States live in poverty. Between 1984 and 1989 photojournalist Steven Shames devoted himself to documenting the plight of these seemingly forgotten members of the most affluent society in history. Following the children into their "homes" in abandoned buildings, cars, or seedy welfare hotels, Shames unflinchingly recorded scenes which are both horrifying and at times strangely heroic. It is a powerful piece of work.
