Inge Morath has been visiting and photographing in the Soviet Union since the 1960s. This volume is a compilation of work done during those visits, accompanied by contemporaneous diary entries. She concentrates on several different aspects of Russian life including the religious life of the Russian people, their penchant for ribald revelry, life in some of the nation's far-flung rural provinces, and their attempt to modernize their lifestyles without surrendering their cultural traditions.
