Long revered in historical circles as the first great woman photographer, Lady Clementina Hawarden's photographs epitomize the Victorian drama of tortured desires and mannered restraint. Her images primarily depict her daughters engaged in imaginative play prefiguring the eroticism of Sally Mann's work and the masquerade of Cindy Sherman's. This is her first major monograph and it will accompany a monumental exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
