The Animal in photography, 1843-1985

This collection of pictures of animals originated in an exhibition at the Photographers' Gallery in 1986. Photographs from the nineteenth-century through contemporary times by well-known and lesser-known artists show us animals in advertising and animal portraiture, among other images. Some of the artists whose images are reproduced here are Jacques-Henri Lartigue, August Sander, Robert Doisneau, Josef Koudelka, Moholy-Nagy, and Eugène Atget.
