Meadowland

The Meadowlands of New Jersey are open, horizontal and nearly deserted although New York City is only two miles away. For a year, Mortenson photographed there, recording the New Jersey landscape of grasses, marshes, railyards, and industrial sites. In the midst of industrial America, he found "tranquility...space, peace and quiet." In his afterword, Jonathan Williams comments on the Meadowlands, past and present, and on Mortenson's photographs of the area. Finely produced, this is Mortenson's first monograph.
