Openly mourning the declining fortunes of upstate New York's once robust dairy industry, photographer Charles Winters and anthropologist Jeanne Simonelli chronicle the lives of several farm families, following them through their yearly work cycles. Winters has a fine eye for character and environment; Simonelli provides a stinging critique of the Department of Agriculture's milk pricing policies, as well as an analysis of their effects on the lives of dairy farmers and their families.
