Personal, intimate, even sometimes invasive, these portraits record the geography of the face of Rebecca Salsbury, Paul Strand's first wife. Beginning with the more formal, distant portraits taken before their marriage, Rebecca is as much a portrait of its namesake as of the arc of her relationship with Strand. The final, almost painfully austere portrait, taken in Taos, New Mexico in 1932, chronicles the disintegration of their relationship with striking eloquence, a strong counterpoint to the images that begin the series.
