"To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first public announcement of photography in 1839 the Royal Photographic Society Historical Group organised an international conference devoted to the early years of photography. This book publishes the papers presented at the conference in an expanded form. Topics ranged from photography's pre-history and the work of Wedgwood, Niepce, and Talbot through to the announcement of the daguerreotype and calotype processes, and the commercialization of photography. Photographic histories of Wales, Scotland, and Ireland were also presented."--the publisher.
