"Through the work of award winning Brazilian-born photographer Leticia Valvederes, the iniquities of planetary power as they affect real women are touchingly personalized. As part of an ongoing project to explore gender and identity bonds amongst marginalized women from different cultures, she photographed Brazilian street girls who are forced to live disguised as boys in order to avoid sexual abuse.
Valverdes supplied the 'invisible' girls of the barrios with the clothes, make-up and mirrors they're denied by the constraints of the ghetto, and sensitively recorded the unfurling of feminine self-confidence as the girls dressed up and escaped into a feminised freedom."-the publisher.
